Ahh if its a plug in chip... they fool the ecu into thinking its fueling X amount when its actually adding a little more. So yeah the trip computer would be slightly out.
But the if its remapped "chipped" ECU it should know how much its putting in.

The plug in box I mentioned on the above post uses 4 wires.
Two wires power the box
Switched Live + Earth
Two wires connect to the FIP on pin 2 and 3

Yeah Ianmjdun is right, the ecu should know what fuel has been used even if it been chipped diesel, petrol or LPG.
Has anyone tried clearing out their intercooler with a glug of petrol to see if it improves the diesel a bit?
