It looks a pretty good dash to me! And a engine change dont mean you need to change the speedo!

Yeah thats it small spring clip that holds the outer and clips onto the catch, should have had one on the old cable though.

It does fit as i have done the same to mine, but i seem to remeber a small clip being involved on the end of the cable..

Dont worry about any warrenty they may have given you, the law is on your side for 6 months under sale of goods, mention this, if he still does not want to know go to cab then perhaps get a solicitor involved in the long run get your costs back of seller. If you are unhappy dont accept a repair...

Thats the whole point of a relay, you would not have to change the cables, just put a bigger cable from the battery to the relay, and the other cables can be smaller.

I would say it was down to poor earthing? My standard cables, correctly terminated and earthed are more than up to the job :)
