How much fuel in the tank? If it's less than half full, a failed in tank pump can cause starting problems. Also as Mark said, check the modulation with the engine hot when you get it started.

Cycling the ign didn't work , then the blower wouldn't speed up then I remembered that I hadn't put 'back to ecu control' on the nano but then the blower speed started to respond without plugging the nano back in again. Might strip it all down...

Cycle the ignition a few times without starting. On mine I can usually hear the motors moving after a while. The docs say it self- calibrates every X hundred uses, but who knows what the real number is !!

Yes it's the bottom one. It's a long shot but try unplugging the power to the hvac to force a learn cycle. Failing that, flash the relevant motor terminals with a 9v battery (both ways) to give it a nudge
