yes there is a clip in the middle that holds the spring cable in place from that clip to the lever on the shoe the spring cable is straight but where it comes through the backplate to the middle of the clip the spring cable bends down then up its like a u bend

yes sounds like the vcu do the test to see how much torque is required to turn the hub (vcu) if your fl rolls back a touch after stopping it could be very tight and past its sell by date
