Hi guys still having problems starting first thing..

So far

injector seals and washers

Air bleed valve

New starter

new etc sensor

new fpr

First thing in the morning however cold it will fire then cut out then start bang on the button next time, not really a problem as I can still use the disco for work but painstakingly annoying as I still haven't solved it :(

May I ask about the fuel pump.. once started shes fine all day its like overnight something nasty happens.. I have friends and family with td5s and all there pumps are more noticeable than mine I almost have to listen out from cold start to hear it..

could fuel pressure be doing this? as by the sound of the pump there doesn't seem to be any air in there else it would be noisey?

Your opinions would be muchly appreciated

run the purge procedure few times more and if no joy check the glowplugs/glowpug relay too...if still no joy a compression test would be relevant

what happens if you hold the throttle pedal to the floor and then try and start it? Will it start first time and stay running?
 
Hi yes if I hold throttle to the floor its fine

Without doing so it starts but runs on 3 cylinders then dies
then if I turn the key again its fine.

If the fuel pump was playing up on cold start would it cause this?

Sounds like a candidate for injector washers and o rings
 
Hi yeah I agree its sure sounds like injector seals

They have been done though :mad:

The only thing left is fuel pump, if there was air in the system wouldn't the pump squeal like mad?

While doing the seals the top of the engine looks in really good order cam lobes and followers etc.. can anybody tell me which relay is for glow plugs?
 
R6 , swap it with R8(heated screen) for test ...and run the 5 throttle purge procedure at least two more times as if there's air in the rail the pump might not be very noisy
 
Thanks for that will swap them around later.. bloody thing its soooo frustrating its not right.. ill swap the fuel pump over this weekend if that doesn't work either shall I do compression test?

The thing is though sometimes it fires right up even after leaving it a couple days so I onestly don't think the engine is nackered..

I love this landy spent so much time on her would be heart broken if I had to fit a new engine

is it the same no matter what the weather is like or is it purely just when it's cold out?
 
When I go to start her up in the morning or if its been stood for some time I get in let the glow plug light go out, and first turn it fires and runs at really low revs then cuts out.. Sometimes if im quick I dip the throttle to the floor then back up again and it revs as normal..

is there any sign of weeping near the fuel pressure regulator? It certainly sounds like air in the fuel.
 
Nope no weeping signs ratty.. Im swapping the fuel pump over tomorrow with a known good one..

After a long run the over day I stopped the engine and did the purge process then started the engine.. it took a few cranks before it started she almost didn't like the purge procedure?

Where as after a long run if I didn't do the purge process it would start after one turn?

Some people just say deal with it but I like things to be right..

when it's running through the purge procedure are you getting gargling noises or is it nice and quiet throughout?
 
Its nice and quiet all the time, the only time it has squealed is when I change the fuel filter but that's normal?​

The pump was making a weird noise when listening up close not air like impeller noise... :bolt:​
 
put a new genuine fuel temp sensor to rule it out... can't you plug in a tester to read some live data, cos your problem might be management related too...did you check the glow plugs?...you can't expect everything to be right as long as you are not certain that all the involved parts are right, difficult cold start could be the result of many management elements if one of them doesnt work properly, and for difficult cold start here's a list of possible causes:
1. Glow plugs
2. MAF sensor
3. Fuel temp sensor
4. Engine coolant temp sensor
5. Fuel injectors

live data would reveal if one of these isn't as it should... and as long you are not certain about these you might just scratch your head and work in vain IMO
 
Hi there just and update

Swapped pumps over yesterday dashed out this morning to see the outcome, Turned the key, She fired right up in one turn :D

Hope Tomorrow is the same and
it was quite cold here last night!
