:confused:well sold the rangy and for some reason i brought a freelander:doh:
looked under it and found it lacks a prop all of it ,it seems the thing to do on these ,also the temp gauge dont work ,its a 2000 5door diesel [not td4 ]so proof that im not smart is this a l or k or wot:confused:and will the prop of a petrol fit ok let the funny comments begin:rolleyes:

Yep, why would you make a 4x4 into a 4x2 unless there was a fault with the drive mechanism? If it had been done to save fuel they might as well have bought an estate car.

If it's a diesel and not a bmw td4, it's an L series. Both the 1.8 and 2.5 are petrol k series.

Sounds like you ought to have done a bit more research and looking before you bought it... Just replaced a rotten 3.9 disco with a hippo, looked at about a dozen til i found a 51 plate 1.8 with 55k on clock, mls head gasket etc, fsh different beast to disco but itll be getting off road prepped and tuned to 150bhp :)

I think he has a better motor than you. A 1.8 FFS!

On a budget MHM! Cant run to welding and engine re build on disco unfortunately! Not been many L series about round here, itll be a td4 for the missis at the back end tho to replace her fabia.

Everythings relative: k series freelanders blow head gaskets, FL1'S Break VCU's and IRD's. Discos suffer body rot and TDI's blow head gaskets. 90/110 rear x members and door frames rot. Rangeys steel bodies rot, v8's slip liners and blow head gaskets. Series 3 chassis and bulk heads are made of monkey metal and gear boxes are weak. All these are generalisations about common/known faults but as long as we are aware of the fault, its cause and how to sort/avoid it, no range of vehicle is bad (apart from datsuns), as long as youre aware of the potential faults.

thanks for replies at least i new the diesels were better than petrols :welcome2:so im looking for prop of an l series complete any ideas on temp gauge checked fuses ,wiring

Well done, random post of the evening so far.

...suppose if I weren't drugs, I'd be able to afford LPG for my 3.9..... on plus side im getting 29mpg with filthy air filter and been stood for three years.

:flame2::flame2::flame2: so wheres the temp sensor that works the temp gauge as its also a swine to start in the morning:doh::doh:

Have you checked the glowplugs?

Also what about this though you'll need to source another vcu by the sounds of it.

Coolant elbow on front of engine where the dipstick is secured has two temp senders, one on top and below. The single wire one is for the gauge and the twin wire one is for EDC.
Earthing the single wire should make the gauge rise to max which would prove the gauge and wiring is OK and the sender is knackered....

Checking the cam belt and FIP belt tension and timing could remedy the bad starting.
