Hi bit of a random question really as I`m trying to figure out how far I can stretch my set of tires without buying new ones.
-How many more miles will I get out of these tires?
-Do they get a lot worse off road when they have less tread?

Just been out and measured them-in the middle where there is most tread, tires are 235 Michelin XZL`s.
Front right:6mm
Back right:7mm
Front left: 4mm
Back right: 5mm

Front right:6mm (4.4mm before illegal)
Back right:7mm (5.4mm before illegal)
Front left: 4mm (2.4mm before illegal)
Back right: 5mm (3.4mm before illegal)

There you go! Nice and easy that. Even I can do that math :rolleyes:

as for miles...

more if you put it on a trailer


as tread is used for grip - I would suggest that the frictional force applied to mud etc will be reduced due to the reduced surface area applying the force....

Done a lot of off road [Farming and trialing] and it seems to me tires grip best in most cases when about two thirds worn,recon at this level tread is worn enough for crud to be thrown out and not block up the pattern and still enough left to bite well.
 
Personally put the lower lower treads on the back if you want all four to last longer.

I'd be surprised if they didn't last 12 months obviously depending on how much mileage you do and how good your tracking is

might i suggest working for bridgestone or pirelli in the near future? :rolleyes:
 
Cheers for the advice, I have some money put aside for 265 BFG muds so that should sort it, I will change them before the summer as I know I will need the landy offroad then. Why would swapping them help if it is rear wheel drive?

It's not rear wheel drive it's permanent four wheel drive so The fronts drive and steer so should therefore wear faster than the rears

Got some bridgestones on mine, been on donkey's,they just don't want to wear out. Mot man said this would be their last year just starting to look a bit ratty:D
 
Only one diff locks, the one in the transferbox so power is equal between front and rear off road. On road diff is open to allow for differences in wheel speeds front and rear[off road this is taken care of by wheel slip] in the same way axle diff's allow for different wheel speeds across the axle,These are not lockable as standard but locking one's can be fitted for extreme off road.

yes do this, i have tyres with similar tread to you but about 1.5mm more all round. I put the more worn on the back and the best on the front, this was 3 years ago and they are not that much different. I do about 3000 a year mixed road and off road
 
Thanks for the advice! I will get them swapped round asap. Another stupid question for everyone- what actually are lockers? I have realised they are fitted to offroaders so why are they not fitted as standard?
 
Lockers,are diffs that can be locked up so drive is solid across the axles to maximize traction in off road situations.Vehicles such as tractors have them as standard because its in off road situations they mostly work. They are of no use on a hard surface because all wheels are now turning at the same speed and the vehicle only wants to travel in a straight line and resists any turning forces.
They are expensive and as most 4x4's spend most of their time on the road the are not standard fit on most 4x4's.Hope that helps.

because they are bloody expensive, and 99% of people wont actually need them. Some companies do fit them (merc G-Wagen has them) and some others. So purely a cost cutting measure to meet the needs of most users who dont need them.

Landrover defenders have open diffs front and rear and a locking centre diff
 
Thanks, yes that mostly makes sense! I think if I won the lottery portal axles would be above lockers, but it would have to be a lottery win at £7k each per axle!
