Ok so my 12000 champion winch packed up (its lasted 5 years pulling me and others so dont laugh ). Anyway came to just check it today It moved about a full revolution unspooling using the remote then it stopped . Only way i could move it was to free spool it. Anyway i took the rope off but it seemed to get jammed up every so often. The solenoids click in and out and i have power at all the right places. This is 2 weeks after i came back from a rather muddy puddy on salisbury plains, So i thought ok it may just be mud and crud. Ok got it stripped down so far and its full of crud and water however got 2 problems. I cant separate the gearbox housing (pic 1) from the rest of it i cant see any bolts etc or anyway to do it. Pic 2 there should be 10 black studs. I have 8 (imagine a clock face) and 1 thats been damaged (5 oclock position) and 1 missing altogether (6 oclock position) When i took the drum off that stud fell out loose

so do those studs let me separate the winch or what do they do ? or am i looking at junking it (cant afford a new winch so big gap in my grill now

Yes, the 10 cap screws hold the gearbox onto the end plate.

Dunno champion winches, but inside there's usually three planetary gearsets. Make sure when you've removed them and cleaned up that they go in the same way, they can't really fit any different, and make note of the relationship of any spacers or shims, and the engagement plate .. these can fit the wrong way round but won't work correctly until they're right .. though the motors are powerful enough to really break them!!

It might be that the loose cap screw just got jammed and stopped it working. If it got stuck in the right position it could easily stop the drum rotating. Take the drive shaft out of the drum, fit it into the gears and rotate it to see if the gears are working, maybe use an electric screwdriver/drill ... If they work you might get away without further dis-assembly, just use brake cleaner or similar to clean it out but don't forget to let it dry and then re-lube it after! I'd strip it though and do it properly ..

ok little update - those torx got the gearbox off. Its all stripped out and cleaned up now reassembled and greased . Brake has been removed and cleaned as well.

Theres an issue with the motor but thats being sorted out by a car electric place needs some soldering doing then fingers x'd should work. First time to strip one down not gone to bad to be honest
