will be renewing my defenders insurance soon, with me being the main driver instead of dad.
have now got a years no claims, and have been quoted 1000 by multiple companies fully comp etc.
my current insurance is costing me nearly 1900 due to a crash last december.
trying to get it as low as possible and wondering just how much difference it will make removing the middle seat and two of the back seats.

I pay £300 with a flux all mods and an engine upgrade,and i crash alot.
YES its cheaper with 2 seats

Be careful with this I have heard if you remove the seats in the back your landy becomes a commercial vehicle in the view of many insurance companies? Can't say i know how this would affect your policy, but knowing insurance companies it probably won't be good.

Best bet would be to visit your insurers website and do a few online quotes, on the same vehicle with different number of seats and see what works out the cheapest.

i will still have two seats in the back.
deffo want to move the middle seat as want to fit a cubby box instead.
thinking of removing the seats behind the bulkhead to make room high lift jack, tools etc
so would be a practical thing to do.
but want to know how much it changes it to see if its worth it.

I just insured the 90TD hardtop 2 seats no rear windows so technically a van?? the insurance didn't make enough difference in cost to matter, between insuring it as a car or as a van. I've got 3PT&F with class1 business use and the business use only added £12 to the annual cost. It cost me £147 + taxes etc, So £167.34 in total but it had a £50 cashback offer on it so £117.34 in total.

I've got no seats in the rear tub of mine (just the usual second row seats) as it's a 110 commecial station wagon. Fully comp, all mods declared, business use including towing broken down vehicles £230. Thats straight after my previous one was torched anorl.

im not surprised YOUR landy got torched at all.

it wont make a difference to the price

when I insured my (11 seat) 110 I asked them to quote me for

a) all 11 seats
b) just the fore 5 seats
c) just the standard front two seats, and
d) just two bucket seats in the front.

All returned the same.

key to being a van or car is it's taxation class. if it's a van, it's classed as light goods vehicle, if it's a car, it's private and light goods. Insurance company cannot argue with taxation class shown on logbook (section 4(x))

Think I also read that DVLA have stopped changing the taxation class of vehicles that are modified during their life

Surley if you remove seats then the vehicle would be 'modified'

Some insurance companies don't insure more than 8 seats cos of minibus type implications with 9 seats or more.

I've just added 2 seats to my disco (now 7 seats). No change to premium.

it is modified, but I believe DVLA won't change the taxation class of the vehicle.

e.g. changing a freelander commercial to a 3 door car by cutting out the windows and fitting the rear seats, it will always be taxed as a commercial.

like wise, taking the seats out of the back of a 3 door and blanking the windows, it will still be taxed as a 3 door car.

+ you have to be 21 with over 8 seats as it comes under a different insurance group as anything over that is classed as a minibus

irrelevant with a landrover, as the aft 6 seats are sideways facing bench seats, and not countable for MOT purposes. my 11 seat 110 is technically a 5 seat station wagon.
