Hi.

My 109 SIII has a 3.5 V8 fitted, so I have very little space between the engine and the rad.

As such I want to fit a slim electric fan to my 109.

I could go for the undoubtedly good quality high performance Kenlowe fan which cost upwards of £100, or get a cheap copy for £22.

I have no problem in spending the extra money if I think I will benefit from it, but I'm wondering if I need a fan that will cool a spewing volcano, or if the cheap fan would do the job.

From what I can gather from other posts, the electric fan cuts in rarely, so I'm leaning towards the cheaper variety.

Has anyone else bought one of these? How have you got on with it?

I'd go for the cheaper one, indeed that's one I have on my list of projects, for when I remove the viscous fan on the Disco .. Project No72.

If it works and works well, no reason why it shouldn't as all it does is move air, then you've gained without lashing out a lot of money.

if it doesn't and I can't think why not, then you've not lost as much ...

That one doesn't seem to come with a control box or thermostat so you'll need to spend a few quid extra on all that stuff to make it actually work or you could just rig up a switch and hope you remember...

An oil cool has been fitted to mine on that side of the rad. Arguably I don't need it, but I'm reluctant to move or remove it unless I have to.

I have the 'stat, a coupler with a hole for fitting the stat into the hose, an over-ride switch, and even a funky little temperature guage.

I was going to fit a fan I got hold of from a turbo Volvo, but offering it up, even with the shaft from the viscous fan hacked off I only have about 2 or 3 mm between the engine and the fan.

Hence looking at Kenlowe type fans.

I put one of the cheap 14" ebay fans on mine, in front of the rad. It worked OK, but still got too hot last summer, although that was probably the rad's fault rather than the fan.

It's now spare as I replaced it with an aircon fan from an vauxhall Omega which fits very nicely in front of the rad, comes with a cowl for better airflow and shifts a load more air. Not sure if it'd fit if you had an oil cooler there though...
