Yep...TD4 auto or manual (i've had/got both and both good) if you want top spec look for HSE or Sport Premium and once you've got it spend 50 quid on bmw crankcase breather, new intercooler hoses and clean/blank off egr vac pipe to get it running right....before you buy get underneath it and make sure the propshaft is there (they are taken off instead of repairing vcu's and diffs) and also check for 'braking' doing slow speed full lock reverse manouvere, sure sign of the vcu going, only 300 quid to sort out but a good bargaining tool

There's not really a huge amount of choice tbh. Td4, 1.8i or 2.5KV6.
Diesel is the best on fuel and most grunty, but also slowest. But can be remapped to quite good performance.
1.8i is actually ok, not hugely speedy but doesn't feel underpowered. HG issues can occur, but it's not a terminal fault.
V6 likes a drink, think V8 sort of mpg nearly. Only auto which is a shame. Quickest stock, but still not really speedy.

With a dealer you have legal comeback with a private sale you have no rights whatsoever (buyer beware) you pays your money and you takes your chances. The TD4 (bmw) engine is prone to turbo failure at high mileage usually due to the crankcase breather filter not being changed at every service (the bmw modified filter extends this period) that's one of the reasons you need a full documented dealer service.

bear in mind that this was originally a fit and forget filter so unless the main dealers were excellent (yeah right) I'll guarantee they weren't done, they aren't even on the service sheet that the dealers use...... main dealer history, worth nowt out of warranty, give me a private seller who knows what he's on about any day of the week.....

There's also the older L-series diesel aka di or even xdi. 1.8 petrol also can suffer liner slippage which is fairly terminal.
