ok, ok, I know what you lot are like. There's a wide variety of anatomically unpleasant places I could put it but I'm not going to go there! :D

I'm planning to fit a tank guard with a removable drop plate on it to my Disco, ('98 300tdi), so I've been giving some thought to the electrics. It occured to me that if the socket was mounted on the rear door, near the bottom to the left of the spare wheel as you look at it, then I wouldn't have to mess about making it detachable and all the wiring would be inside the vehicle.

Has anybody out there done this, any gotchas that I should know about before I start pulling the door trim off and set to drilling holes?

why not just do it in the bumper itself? as you use the rear door you are constantly disturbing the wiring.
also does the strength on the drop plate state that its for towing and meet the standard of the origional or is it sold as a removable drop plate and recovery point??????

Thats exactly where I put the socket on my disco and it worked a treat. it's kept out of the mud. easier to get at and you can run the wiring thru the exsistin rubber tubing that goes from the door to the body, and carries the wiring for the numberplate light etc. And it pops out right next to the towing socket plug that LR fitted to the main wiring harness. So it's a piece of **** to wire up.
 
Heyup Raz, It's the Guardian guard and drop plate that I'm fitting, they do a recovery point for it but it's the towing plate that I'll be using. As to whether it meets any particular standard, I must admit I hadn't thought of that....better check on that! I was thinking that putting the socket on the bumper would leave it exposed to being clobbered but on the door it's protected. I'll have to go with red on the wiring though, if it's routed properly it shouldn't be a problem.

Red, thanks for the info. Always good to know that something works before cutting into shiny, (well -ish), metal! M3XLZ de G6MXT k (and there was me wondering why you put your reg plate up on here, didn't twig! :D )

i knew who's guard you meant ;) the drop plate just so happens to be able to attach your tow ball too ;)
talk about a get out clause

gotta agree on the point to which you wanna attach you leccy's to now red put it so simple.

whats that about putting a reg plate up?

M3XLZ It's my Amateur Radio Licence Call Sign. Lots of Peeps have PM'd me asking why I've put my reg number up.:D Hence why I've now put "Radio call sign" in front of it. :rolleyes:
