Hi all, A fair while ago now I bought some oil from a local motor factors. The grade they gave me is 85W/140. The thing is, given my advancing years, I cannot now recall whether I was intending to change the oil in the gearbox or the transfer box. So basically, I need to know which box this grade of oil is most suitable for so I can get on with changing it before the weather turns nasty. Please assist! cheers. I tried to use the "D'oh" smiley but never seem to have any luck with the advanced smilies.

its gear oil, DO NOT put it in the gearbox, its for the transfer box and axles only. If you want gearbox oil then you need either mtf or atf (prepare the can of worms) which grade you need i'm sure someone will be along soon to tell you.

Thanks for that, Albert. It's really all I needed to know.

85/140 has its uses, BUT it does sap quite a bit of power.
Couple of examples from personal experience.

My S2 runs a tdi engine loads of posts saying will wreck gearbox, read some time ago L/rover recommended 84/140 for heavy duty use, so as the tdi has more than twice the bhp of the 2.0 litre diesel that was originally fitted thats what it got, knocking on for 4 years later its still doing the job, but its a right bugger when weather is cold!

On my 90 the tfer box was a constant source of leaks no matter how many seals/gaskets fitted etc so ran it on 85/140 slowed the leaks to almost nothing.
Then changed from 1.19 to 1.4 ratio box again with 85/140 then a couple of months later thought hang on this box doesnt leak so went back to syn 75/90 and I could clearly feel the old girl has some more get up and go.

Only thing I know that actually uses 85/140 oil is the small truck diffs at work.
