There are some pretty good bits and pieces on this to be found on t'internet, but what advice do you chaps personally have for storing diesel over x period of time? I feel sure many of you do keep a bit aside.

I'm not talking about anything absurd - just two or three jerrycans' worth for that 'rainy day'.

Diesel is prone to bacterial infestations which, over time, can render it a pondlike writhing bag of ****e under the 'right' conditions.

Therefore, I'm after:

(a) any general suggestions to preserve diesel fuel in a serviceable state and extend its shelf-life - e.g. additives, storage temperatures etc. of which you have personal experience, and

(b) any thoughts on viable periods of storage/cycling of 'stock' advised to prevent degradation...

....that sort of thing.

Bio-diesel and veg oil are obviously a bloody good option here but, apart from some very basic reading around the subject, I've never tried it.

Keep it in a jerry can, every few months use it and refill it. A can filled to the brim and sealed is pretty good, vacuum out the air and it would be better but that's a bit excessive personally

I use a preservative from frost

For diesel and garden petrol. It's not outrageously expensive.

There are better ones (like fuelset) that disperse water to stop fungus growth but they are expensive.

The more full the can, the less room for air, the less chance of any problems. I keep a jerry can in my landy at all times and have never had a problem with the fuel, even after getting on for a year.

Bio has its problems too for storage, not least that it has the ability to absorb water, its also prone to bacterial growth so im told.
