Recently replaced all 4 bolts holding on the military bumper on my 110 as they were rusted (looked deeper than just surface rust). Was wondering if anyone knew what the bumper with the standard towing pin is rated to? Just curious really! Cheers

Also what is the rear nato towing pintle rated to? I have attached it with 2x 1cm steel backing plates, and 4x M12 bolts. 3 nuts on the top 2, 2 nuts on the bottom 2.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the bumper pin was for trailer shunting and not recovery........

Will depend fully on the exact bumper and thickness.

Please make sure you use high tensile bolts. Last thing you want is a deadly projectile flying through the air when your recovery points fail.

Thanks for the replies I did use high tensile bolts to replace the rusted ones so hope those should hold! I may need to fit a new bumper then if it`s not safe for recovery?

It might be ok for recovery. But it really depends. Over the years and from different sources, bumper material thickness has varied a lot.

Some will be fine being used for recovery, while others will just bend. With high tensile bolts, I doubt it'd fail instantly. Most likely is it'll bend it forward into a banana shape.

If you want a simple front recovery system, fit some chassis shackles.

Using a kinetic energy recovery rope will also be kinder on recovery points.

Not exact science I know but I used to tow Beverley transport aircraft when I was in the RAF with a Series 2 - it was strictly forbidden but we all did it. This was using the Nato towing clamp thingy. Nearly forgot to mention that a Beverley weighed in at about 60 tons and the movement was on hardpacked sand.

Bumper isn't rated for any more than trailer shunting and straight tows on the road

Use your jate rings on the chassi for recovery
