my mates 2001 4.6 will idle all day long temp is fine if you drive it it gets hot but he had a sniffer test done and it passed he is going to france in 2 days in the car can anyone please help

2 garages have looked and cant find the problem 
think about it.......
if it idles ok -then overheats when revving - it sounds like the cooling??? system can only handle the heat output at low revs -so a duff viscous fan might cool at idle, but slip at higher revs, causing an overheat.
it is also possible that the radiator isnt man enuff either, but that is less likely as airflow should increase the cooling, but, and its a BIG BUT,if the rad has blocked sections, thight might also cause the problem,as could a water pump without an impellor. Just as peeps have said
But - if you are going to counter any suggestions with "2 garages have looked and cant find the problem ", then anything we say wont be good enuf - so go to a 3rd or 4th or......

im not countering your replies my friend just told me. if i was not interested in you and other members advice i would not waste your time and ask
The thermostat maybe partially stuck shut of not opening properly having lost some of it's wax. There is sufficient flow to cool it via bypass port at tickover but as revs and heat rise not enough flow through rad.

He said take the keys and gave me the logbook so i will keep you all informed
