Hello,

We have a series 1 86" and it's been modified in the past. A rear half shaft has snapped, however have no idea how to get these axle ends off. Please see the pic and advise if you can!

Not a S1 owner but that looks odd. What's the other side look like? Normally there's a drive flange in the centre which has 5 bolts. Whatever axle that is it looks very strange place to break. I'd start by putting it on axle stands and investigate further. Sorry can't be more help.

It looks normal to me for a Series one but I'm not familiar with the axle.

James Martin would know.......James?

Yeah I'm used to the ones with a flange and 5 bolts holding it, but this has nothing like that and can't find any info anywhere! It doesn't appear to be a cover and after taking the drum brake apart still have no ideas...

its the early semi floating axle ,the later fully floating axle is what most are used to, its semi floating as half shaft outer end is fixed to wheel hub,you have to strip down brakes and remove the whole lump back plate included, a press is needed to separate shaft from bearings

James a font of knowledge as usual. That's very interesting. I didn't know that semi floating axles were used on S1's. Must put quite a stress on the half shafts.

Snapped one on my 1954 86" in the late seventies . Sent it to National Coal Board local engineering workshop to get bush removed and new shaft fitted .The old chap doing the job for me said it was up to 25 ton pressure before the bush slid off the shaft.

First thing to do is either remove the daft spacer or fit longer studs. The wheel nuts are out of safety they should have at least 1.5 threads showing when in place.

Looks like the rim is a heavy duty "wolf" type.

If you do a web search for smithies landrover will bring up a NZ website of interest page 105 of the series 1 workshop manual shows how to strip and replace.
