Just out of curiosity I wanted to find out what the large holes were for in each of the cross members of the chassis.

My dad said that they were intended to take drive shafts to drive farm equipment. Is this true? Would you need a special gearbox?

Ta.

no pto can run off any series gear box, originally quite a bit of farm machinery could be used with a landy ,often with rear pulley drive ,at a time when grey fergie was king a landie wasnt so ridiculous as a real work horse

Yep.....pto shafts to run pumps, winches anything you can figure a way of hooking up to it really. Drive taken from the back of the box in the same sort of way an overdrive does.
