hi
after taking the 90 offroading and a stop in a fuel station (v8 lol) started it up and it sounded awful, later to find out it was only firing on 5 cylinders, limped it home:( does anyone have any tips on waterproofing it?

First thing would be to spray a load of WD40 over your coil/plug leads, plug caps and low tension leads. This drives out moisture and is a moisture repellent. hen I suppose to make a plastic splash guard to shield stuff.

I am not familiar with your engine and engine bay but WD40 is a good start, some expert will be along soon to finish what I have started.
 
Have to agree that WD40 is great stuff. You can use rubber gloves, 'carrots' and silicone selant as well - the trouble with these solutions is condensation has no where to escape - which causes cold starting problems. The best solution is a military waterproof distributor, but they are rare and cost £500.

I've been running V8's for the past 15 years and have found that they are actually very waterproof as long as the distributor cap, coil, plugs and leads are in first class condition - not just looking OK. I've been in water half way up the front grille which was sprayed alll over the electrics by the fan with no problems.

However, do bear in mind other possibilities. I had an incident when I thought I had water trouble with my V8. What had actually happened was fuel starvation - the motion of offroading had dislodged bits in the tank. When the car stood still in the car park the dislodged bits settled and then got sucked up into the fuel pump when it retsarted. The cure was a new fuel filter and a flush through.

Were have you seen these distributors ? I have seen the one for the 101 but was told it will not work. Any link or model would be appreciated tks

i have a v8 bobtail and all i can say is you can do all the prep u want and u cant do what you can in a doozil,in my old fender weve had water upto the level of the windscreen with no issues apart from wet feet

wd40 helps but gets washed off the 1st lot of water you go thru

there is only 1 sure fire way to waterproof a v8 and thats megasquirt megajolt
nothing else will work it will only prolong the inevitable

hence why im saving for megasquirt but at £600 it aint cheap
 
My system has been tested crossing creeks(rivers) in Oz and driving thru floods deep enough to float my off road trailer behind(till it filled with water) I still have the normal viscous fan fitted

I have rtv seal round dizzy cap , also fitted breather pipe to body. The coil is sealed in lexan box also with breather The amp was also in sealed lexan box (before went to later type engine) The breathers connect into air cleaner snorkel system . The HT leads are all magnacore HD .
The biggest stopper for V8 Dfenders in OZ was coil top, esp as mounted low down at side of rad in OZ spec model :)confused:) not on top of inner wing as in UK spec. HTSH :)

My best bit of advice is stay out of water unless really need to to get where you are going , as its a very dangerous environment for vehicles .
