Hi Guys
apologies if this is in the wrong section, couln't see where else to post it

Have just bought a defender with a warn m8000 winch attached to front bumper

Have poked around the net and it seems there should be some sort of remote control for it, which i do not have

Is there any way of testing it without the remote control, and if i free spool it and pull the cable out will it need to work to get it back on the drum.

There may also be a switch on the dash and a cut off switch requireing a key. trace all cables from the motor to see where they go. There should be 1 positive to battery and 1 negative to battery. The 'kill' switch should be inline of the positive. The next thing to do would be to see how many pins the controller socket has. M8000 at a guess, Warn 3 pin. Buy one 2nd hand off ebay. If your close, you can borrow mine.

you can 'jump' the winch controllers in the solenoid pack, there is a warn istruction guide somewhere, I will find it in a minute. you can spool off, but getting it back by hand is a mission, especially if you have a steel rope.

Here it is:

Warn Motor Testing Procedure

If you find yourself in a situation where your winch is clicking but it is not working, you may have a motor problem....or you may have a solenoid problem. The following procedure, from Warn, will help you determine the status of your winch motor.

1. Put the winch in freespool.

2. Disconnect the positive lead from the battery (leave the ground lead attached).

3. Label and disconnect the three cables that run from the control pack to the three posts on the motor.

4. Stamped next to the three posts on the motor will be "A", "F1" and "F2". Run a small jumper wire (5"-6" dead lead, 8 ga. will work just fine) from "A" to "F1" and put power from the battery (jumper cables work good) to "F2". The winch motor should run in one direction at this time.

5. Next, place the jumper wire from "A" to "F2" and put power from the battery to "F1". The winch motor should run in the opposite direction at this time.

If these steps are followed correctly and the motor runs in both directions, the motor is good.

will have a look later in the week when i am back in the workshop

Yes it is a steel cable and thanks for the offer of a loan but am just north of cambridge so a fair way away

will try the override first.
 
Bugger didnt check to see if it was a 6 pin type.

good news it works, had it wired exactly as you suggested GriffDowg

worked a treat so got ambitious and did the same in engaged mode and it wound cable in and out

so is the M8000 a 6 pin or not?

anybody know or do i take a punt anyway

Hi,

If its a 5 pin you need i have a spare remote that i bought from ebay because mine didnt come with one. But then craddocks called to say they had found the original remote.

It cost me £30 inc postage, ill sell it to you for the same price? i cant however test it as i havent got around to fitting the winch yet!

you should see the socket for the remote on the solenoid box, if it is the original. have a look to see how many pins it has and how many wires. mine has 3 as it is a fairly old one.

if you locate it and are still not sure, 3 pin remotes are for serial numbers 195599 to 211769

5 pin remotes are: 211769 to 623336

however, people chop and change solenoid packs on a regular basis so there is nothing to say if it is original or not!

when you have found your serial number, I suggest you download the right manual here: Warn Industries - Jeep, Truck & SUV Winches: M8000 this will give you some good info.

the one i had bid on on ebay the buyer offered me a second chance bid so bought it

tested it today works a treat

now just got to finish the work and then get it MOT'd

ready for some action, might even get some proper green laning in instaed of just round the farm
