OK, let me get this.

Facing the engine, standing in front of the 300TDI, I have to turn the wrench clockwise to remove the fan?

Rule of thumb is it undoes in the same direction as the fan rotates

With he right spanner they are, only a few quid too so save yourself any hassle and get one. I use this one and its fine for the job Laser Tools Viscous Fan Spanner 32/36Mm - Engine Cooling System + Free Led Keyri | eBay
