I'm looking at a parts list produced by Land Rover, and notice that in the diagram (and more importantly, in my cylinder head), I have 2 springs per valve - that is a smaller diameter spring sitting inside a larger spring. The part number in the LR parts list is ERR4640.
When I check ANY website selling LR parts, there is only ONE spring shown - is this a superceded item?

Sherpa manual shows two springs but I do not have parts manual .
LDV might be able to advise if they are still around.
What prefix is your engine mine was 15J?

Tricky question - my engine is a Defender 110, but it's in a London Taxi and the engine number starts with 21J, not the usual 12J.
One kind lady I called at LRDirect says that her microfiche shows a note that it was an "upgrade/change", but she didn't come across as being very experienced.

Just hoping someone on here can just confirm that the new one spring per valve aint gonna cause me problems.
 
Mine only had one spring per valve :confused: Mine is a very early 2.5 though (before they fitted the crankcase breather) so maybe 2 springs are a later addition?
 
Both the defender and series parts books show a two piece spring.
That's also what has been fitted to both early and late series heads I have stripped lately.
Watch out if you are trying to replace valves and collets too - earlier valves, collets and spring cups are different. Later types have three grooves at the top of the valves and matching collets. These collets are smaller, and need a different spring cup.

As the dog returneth to it's vomit.....
Bought springs from two different suppliers - both sent a single (thicker) spring as replacement. Hope it's OK, cause I'm planning to have it running by the weekend!
