Afternoon all, theres lots of thread about converting a defender into a v8 but is it the same process for a discovery?

Basically, i love my tdi engine but i've alway been a bit of a petrol head and cant resist a v8 gurgle, the other half wont let me have the discovery and a fast car! the cost running cost between fuel isnt an issue as my discovery is purely for when i go off road, one thing i assume is fine but need to ask is does the v8 have enough low down grunt for climbing over obstacles?

Since it has been fitted to Range Rovers since 1970 and a D1 is basically a RR chassis I would say yes

Plenty of grunt and smooth and no turbo lag either. Apart from water wading its actually a better off roading engine. Sharper throttle, smooth and bigger rev range, allowing a wide range of speed in a single gear. The engine is also lighter too, so less weight over the front.

As for fitting it to a 200Tdi. Not sure how easy it is, the 200 in a Disco is different to a 90. I’m guessing you might need a shorter bell housing, but suspect that would require different engine mounts, but really don’t know. Totally guessing.

I suspect the easiest way would be to buy a V8 Disco, then you’d have all the bits to swap over. Or simply build one good Disco out of two, depending on the condition of yours.

Of course, if you are feeling adventous, there are other V8 engines, such as the Lexus LS400 engine or the Chevy LS1. The latter you can buy off the shelf adapter kits to mate to a Rover transmission. Obviously a much bigger project, but potentially a lot more power too.
