I have a 1999 TD5 Discovery 2 Auto 90,000 miles,Had it 4 years now,The mot 3 years ago failed on handbrake i said repair it make it work,New oil seal and shoes worked OK 4 or 5 months then it never held,OK i thought leave it until next MOT as i never use hand brake.Then the next MOT different place "Hand brake fail mate" OK repair it,4 or 5 months later hand brake stopped holding,OK wait until MOT time again.Last March took it again to a different place By Leamington Spa Failed MOT again,OK will get Hand brake repaired,Again another new seal cleaned off the hand brake shoes drum etc worked well passed the test .........Last night 5th Aug thought i would try the H/B" never " held,So i will have to wait until next February,Now i'm really ****ed offffff this should not have to be repaired all the time ,Any alternatives or advice would be appreciated.Ps i only do about 3,000 miles a year.

if its the same fault (oil on the shoes)then you need to find why ,poor flange,cheap seals fitted,sezied prop slide or worn bearings ,alternatively early boxes had oil catcher which could be fitted to yours helps to keep oil of shoes

This oil catcher was it for the early td5 disco auto as that sounds as thoe it might the the thing.I did drive it about a mile early on today with the H/B on and i could smell burning oil underneath when i stopped the h/b seemed to work a bit better,So i think i will try again tomorrow see if i can burn off more lol.

its in most but they sometimes get removed bolts on bottom back plate fixing bolts should unless real bad leak let oil run out of rear of back plate and not on shoes

tiz easy to strip it all down and wash everything in petrol. yu can then see where the oil seal is leaking. make sure the drain hole is free. (it is situated behind the backing plate underneath the rear of the Tbox extension).

I was told by good friend of mine who also had the same problem, until some one told him that when you replace the seal if you also replace the flange then the job will last ages,So i went to the place that did mine in the spring and asked why they never asked me if i wanted the flange replacing at the same time ????????Never got an answer but for £100 they will change oil seal again plus fit new flange SO i'm thinking i will wait until about a week before my MOT runs out next march then get it repaired again.
