Hi Pat
I've found that the tailgate will only open when the drivers door has been unlocked. My drivers door central locking isn't working at the moment and the tailgate won't open until I've opened the drivers door with the key. If your drivers door is locking / unlocking OK, you may have a faulty microswitch in the door lock mechanism.

hi lads,its not the rear door tail gate,its the rear passenger door,cheers pat
whats the issue? not opening from both sides? not sure if you can get at the hinges, carefully take out the bolts, then open the door just enough to get at the striker.
or
take the door card off, i think you should be able to get at the door card if you move the seat, and try to operate the latch manually????
