hi all , i have a near new michelin 4x4 tyre which was the spare on my 2000 td4 , they don't make these tyre's anymore , i have the new michelin scyrones ? on the rear ( pair ) and two michelin 4x4 worn on front , can i put the new-ish 4x4 and a new scyrone on the front or back ? or do you have to fit the same tread patten/tyre type - ie buy 2 new tyres and 4x4 back on the spare rack

NO NO NO NO!

the Freelander is particularly critical with the tyres that are fitted. Only fit the same tyres across an axle. Ensure that the tyres yu fit front and rear are the same rolling diameter - else yu will screw yo VCU (at a minimum).

ok thanks thats wot i wanted to know

2 new michelin sycrones then and leave 4x4 on spare

so you can't run a new tyre with a half worn one then

nope - not adviseable. best think is flog yo spare on fleabay and get one that matches wot yu got. Also go to a GOOD tyre place and find out the rolling road diameter of both types of tyre fitted - not just its nominal size. I had a Michellin 195.15hr 75 on a Rover that was 15mm smaller in diameter when new than a Pirelli - it werent wrong - just a diff manufactures tyre.

OK thanks , i think i will get 2 new michelin scyrone's fitted to match the rear as there good tyres

and i think yu need to fit the new tyres on the rear - check yo user manual.

yes the last new tyres were fitted to rear and it states that in the user manual , don't understand the reason for fitting new tyres to rear only though

the front tyres are ok about 4mm tread depth , they are the original tyres so 7 years old 57k miles , but one has slow puncture now and im feed up of pumping up every week im not that mad at having to buy 2 tyres as they last so long

its coz yu have an ickle item called a VCU - that stands fur Virtual Cock-up Unit which will screw up your entire drive system if yu dont treat it with kids gloves.

the reasoning is, it is apparently easier to control a front wheel blow out than a rear wheel blow out. You have degree of control by virtue of the steering wheel, but on the back, chances are it could spin round like a rear wheel slide.

A number of tyre fitters will only fit new to the back (unless you're buying 4...... doh!)
