Hi all,
I'm the lucky owner of a 1.8 petrol Freelander! And am looking into swapping out my tyres for something a little more capable on the rough stuff.
The old Hippo's got 16" rims so i know there will be more choices available to me than some of the larger wheel sizes but...
Where do i start?
Does anyone have any suggestions as to a capable AT tyre that won't break the bank? I'd like to remain under £300-£350 for a set if possible.
Thanks!

Yokohama Geolander A/T G015 are a good all rounder.
Michelin Latitude Cross are slightly better, but much more expensive.

You can also fit slightly larger tyres than standard onto the 16 rims, without any clearance problems. ;)

Thanks Nodge!
I've just had a cheeky peek at the Geolanders, they look good and not too expensive.
Do you have any experience with these?

Prices can fluctuate on them quite a lot. I paid about £60 each for my first set, and about £85 each for the second set about 4 years later.

Yes, I've had a couple of sets. They're very good, giving good grip on wet roads as well as in the rough stuff too.

That's similar to what i've seen online. The cheapest are around £57 and the most expensive at around £104...
Thanks!

I've had a think about this Nodge, and a bit of a skim over some old posts!
I'm not sure i'm up for lift kits and wheel spacers just yet but i would like a little extra ground clearance...
Could i just use tyres with a slighty larger profile eg. 215/75R16 or would they need to be slightly wider too?
Judging by the comments from older threads, a 75mm profile shouldn't cause any clearance issues.

The standard 215/65/16 tyres have a diameter of approximately 27". Going to 215/75/16 will push the diameter up to 28.7" or thereabouts.

So yes, they should fit ok without spacers or a lift kit. The width is no more than standard, so that gives plenty of room for the tyre to clear the spring cups on the struts.

I prefer a bit of extra tyre width on the road, so would go for 225/70/16 instead. These have a diameter of approximately 28.4" so will still fit just fine, but have 10mm more tyre on the road.

Sounds good to me, more rubber = more grip i suppose!
I'll aim for the Yokohama Geolanders in that size then i think!
Thanks again...

I'd fit any of these, which I've put in my preferential order.

I've put the Yokohama above the Cooper due to the better wet performance of the Yokohama.
The Cooper tyres will outlast the Yokohama and offer slightly better mud performance. So you can choose what works for you.
