Hi guys, engine swap nearly complete and the engine turns over now ive got my new starter motor fitted :)

However the car won't fire. What things do i need to be testing?

ive left the injector pump and injectors from the omega engine on there, im told by a diesel engineer that these aren't coded, is this correct? so they should just operate as normal?

just thinking where i should be looking for clues? best way to test its getting fuel? that glow plugs are heating etc? or is there a procedure when ive refitted pipework to prime it all up?

Thanks for any replies.
Josh

I dont really have any idea but reading back on your posts...

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/range-rover-1997-engine-replacement-2-5-a-50882.html

if you read that thread that you originally posted on geek says you need to swap some stuff over from the old engine to the replacement one, e.g. number 4 injector etc.

To test the fuel pump itself I would try using the method shown in RAVE under the technical service bulletin section to try and solve poor hot starting...

4. Switch off ignition and disconnect fuel feed pipe from fuel filter housing. Place end of pipe into a measuring jug capable of containing at least 0.5 litre.
5. Remove fuse box lid and remove relay R12.
6. Connect an electrical feed from the battery to terminal 5 of relay R12 housing for exactly 10 seconds.
7. Note the quantity of fuel dispensed. A minimum volume of 180ml in 10 seconds confirms satisfactory fuel pump delivery.
8. Refit relay R12 and fuse box cover.

Good luck with getting it going though, have been following your progress roughly and am glad to see your almost on the road with it! :)

Hi Josh.
When i changed my engine i didnt swap over the injector. It started first time. Make sure you have got diesel bleed up to the injectors, to do this undo each injector pipe a couple of turns and then crank over the engine. You should have a small amount of fuel run out around the nut. To check the heater plugs firstly check you are getting 12 volts at the top of each plug with a test meter, if that is ok you then need to dissconnect each wire from the plugs and with a test meter set to continuity test put one lead to earth and the other lead to the top of each plug in turn. If the plugs are ok you will get continuity (should be a beep from meter) If you have just 1 plug not working this will cause problems. Hope this helps

right i think i may have tracked down the problem, the fuel feed on the injector pump from the tank, should it be going into the top of the pump or the back (near the alternator) When i turn the ignition on and turn over the engine i have disconnected the pipe from the tank and nothing comes out?

Hi josh. The fuel in pipe should go to the top of the pump closest to the timing chain end. When you turn the ignition on you should get fuel pumping out for about 10 seconds. Luke

yeh not going into the top of the pump though? there is one nearer the timing chain a bit lower down (the inlet) and the outlet is on top of the pump is that right? Where should i be fault finding if the fuel is not coming through? will it do it just on cranking or just with the key in position 2?

Yes thats right. The inlet is by the timing chain nearest the alternator. I havnt personal had problems with the fuel pump but i would start by checking the voltage to the pump in the tank, I think you might have to remove the tank for this. The other thing you could try is have a small funnel, insert it into the ful pipe from the filter to the injection pump fill it with fuel and then see if it will start.

Ps i take it you have got fuel in the tank !!
