I'm still poking around trying to eliminate a bit of smoking and had a thought re the turbo solenoid - what would I expect to see if the vent hose were blocked? I know there is vacuum being applied because i get boost, but i understand the turbo vents to the atmosphere via the hose with the filter on the end when not under vacuum. Is there anything other than a blockage that could prevent the turbo venting? Just trying to eliminate possibilities before i get stuck in again tomorrow.

I did, yes. I'm going to check the hoses are connected to the correct ports on the solenoid soon as i get the car here, but I figured they probably are or i wouldn't be getting boost.

I was wondering what the effect would be if for whatever reason the vent function wasn't working - if that is a possibility when the vacuum hoses are functional.
