After all my friends having gearbox transmission problems I felt sure to have bucked the trend in my 2009 model....upto the 70k mark where I'm told is the telling time...

Until the last few weeks in almost idle mode at 30-40mph the change wasn't as smooth as normal.
Then today coming out on the A2 in traffic the same thing, only this time, An amber warning gear box fault light occurred.
Managed to drive ok but car won't go into 4th or above in either mode.

Stopped allowed car to cool down all gears work reverse etc but still won't go into 4th

Dare not drive it.....any further.

Any ideas and should I main dealer it or go to a gear box specialist?

And apologises if you were on the A2 behind me this afternoon.

I would imagine that a main dealer won’t have the first idea what’s wrong with your transmission but they will at least be able to read the codes. Higher mileage 6HP26s have been known to suffer from wear of the rear stator bush which allows leakage in the hydraulic circuit to the E-clutch (which is used in 4th, 5th and 6th gears). The resulting lack of pressure and therefore torque capacity in the clutch causes it to slip and the controller detects this and inhibits shifts into 4th, 5th or 6th gear. However your mileage sounds low for this particular issue to have occurred.

Update, Finally got round to dropping it off to the main dealer, Phil seems you might be right re the main dealer, fault code is P0735-00.... drives ok in manual shift mode although it gets a jolty in the transmission in 5th gear to 6th. Main dealer has said fault code was relative to a 5th gear problem, and changing the transmission fluid will go either way... also have also heard by changing the radiator this helps?

Any advice would be appreciated as this all of this is a dark Art to me! its only done 70,000 miles and i drive like the age i now am!

I am only killing time until Phil returns as legend has it he has Esso LT71141 running through his veins and I know nothing of the 6 speed ZF but the rad change theory may be linked to overheat strategy whereby the transmission holds the revs higher when too hot to pump more fluid through and the rads have a tendency to block at the bottom where the transmission cooler feeds from which is not what you are suffering from but Phil will put me right. I am not sure the rad / trans cooler issue applies to the later L322 as in after the BMW era anyway

To be fair any information you Phil or others can give is appreciated. It really is a dark art to me, made even more mysterious by the main dealers offer of £500.00 for an oil transmission change.

Only £500, you must have found a generous one, £500 is generally the starting price before adding any parts or labour.
We don't see many newer vehicles here, there are a lot of L322's from the BMW time up to 2005 as they are well supported with diagnostics and relatively easy to fix with the right knowledge all of which I gained from here.
When it comes to knowledge, I am a grain of sand and Phil is the Sahara !

Seems like for a transmission fluid change, LT71141 is liquid gold. Especially if it doesnt make any difference or makes it worse...

Now im starting to wish i'd paid more attention re mechanics class. Picking up those grains of sand.

Lots of transmission garages out there in kent how do know if they are any good what to look for.

I am not sure about transmission specialists in Kent so I did mine myself but only under the supervision of Phil and others like SaintV8 without them I wouldn't have even started.
I am not sure LT71141 is the correct fluid for the 6 speed !
@gold rover , when I say easy I mean easy to spend money on!!

Wouldnt even attempt it myself...i can build buildings but anything that involves oil unfortunately im lost other than a pratical understanding. Which im looking to use to make sure whatever happens i only pay for what needs doing and at a fair / right price...

To its credit the 6HP26 has relatively few issues, but the ones it does have include :

1. Solenoids
2. Solenoids
3. Solenoids
4. Solenoids
5. Solenoids
6. Solenoids
7. Solenoids
8. Harsh 1-2 & 2-1 shift engagement (firmware update)
9. Rear stator bush wear (no 4th, 5th or 6th gears)
10.Seized cable trunnion in gear selector lever (drops into neutral)

Can you guess what I’m going to suggest might be the issue next?

I’d be tempted to swap out EDS 2 & 4 and see if the issue moves with it (the B & E clutches are engaged in 5th gear). I can lend you a couple of replacements to try if you like.

EDS 1 = A clutch
EDS 2 = B clutch
EDS 3 = C brake
EDS 4 = D brake & E clutch
EDS 5 = main system pressure
EDS 6 = torque converter LUC

Note that the yellow cap solenoids (EDS 1, 3 & 6) have a rising pressure characteristic with current and for the blue cap solenoids (EDS 2, 4 & 5) the pressure reduces with increasing current.

i am also Rochester, the only people I have used for general land rover and range rover is AHL Engineering who are two brothers and really nice genuine guys. You could talk to them about carrying out what Phil suggests. i basically paid them for a couple of hours to try and diagnose something for me that wasn't findable really but they were really helpful and only charged me to the nearest 15 minutes in my favour.
i would talk to them and see what they say. i dealt with Angus mainly.

Hi Phil, are these similar to the 5HP24 in that the sump is removed and the valves are accessible from underneath without much trouble?

On the 6HP26 the solenoid connectors are an integral part of the black plastic electronic control module of the mechatronic unit which would need to be separated from the hydraulic valve body first, before the solenoids could be removed. This means that the complete mechatronic unit has to be unbolted and dropped down from the underside of the transmission. Once the control module is removed the solenoids are simply held in by a single metal retaining plate, like on the 5HP24.
