2001 P38 4.0 Automatic

Checked transmission fluid level to see if OK.
With vehicle on flat I removed the filler plug from near top of sump. Oil gushed out as if being pumped..
Rave says fill till drips out of filler hole but it was above this level. How is this possible to be above filler level. Checked with engine off and ticking over.
Am I missing something?

only way it can go above is if the car was at an angle when filled,,, I take it you have a manual as the auto has a dipstick in the engine bay!
 
There is no dipstick on the post 99 gearboxes. Only check the level with the engine running and after having moved the gearstick through each position.
 
sounds like a build up of pressure somewhere, needs an oil and filter change
speaking of atf what is the best type to use on p38, I know they say dex 2 but there are better atf's nowa days, has anyone tried a newer atf or is it just d 2 that people use?
I have a slight atf leak so need a top up and not sure what to use
 
Fluid level MUST be checked with oil COLD. Start engine run through gears several times and place in park. Remove level/filler plug. If you checked it warm oil will flow out. If you checked it with engine running and without cycling gears oil will flow out.

No build up of pressure, it ****es out if not completely cold and if you haven't cycled through the gears with the engine idling.
I've got Dex 3 in mine but be careful there are many different versions of Dex 2 & 3 around, the spec is in the owners manual and RAVE:)

On later cars with no level or fill up tube. Ashcrofts recommend:
put transfer case in neutral remove oil filler level plug, front face of oil sump, fill until it overflows, start engine, quickly pump more oil in until it overflows move the gear stick up and down a few seconds in each gear whilst topping the oil level up, once level has stabilised, test drive and recheck oil level.

Ok if you are a Jack in a Box i suppose. Dipstick model was a lot easier.:D:D:D

Completely agree, dip stick was a lot easier! can't understand why a sealed type gearbox was introduced on later cars???

The method of filling is definately a two man operation. The way we do it is: Car on a car lift, someone in drivers seat to operate the gears/engine and someone underneath with an oil drain unit to catch the overflow and a pump to push in the fluid! Oh for a dip stick!!!

The dipstick and tube probably cost Land rover a fiver to fit. They saved a bit of money. It also makes servicing more expensive. Have to think of the dealers you know.

Yep, that must be it, can't see any other reason unless the EU has a new directive out on dip sticks!

No not for a long time now. Doc said my eyes were duff and other things came up aswell. I told him i could see the Sun. He said yeah but it's the runway i'm on about.
