Posting this on behalf of a relative.
Had a bad week with land rovers between us, got 2 discovery's in dock.

He's just had clutch and flywheel done and they're now saying gearbox and transfer box has gone.
I'm doubtful of it being both, and somebody I spoke to for a recon box was shocked it was both.

What are the signs the transfer box has gone? And what is the likelihood both have failed at once?

It's an early disco 2 td5 manual. Think its on an 02 plate, maybe 51 can't remember

Where they join together there is a splined shaft(from the gearbox) to a splined gear ( in the transfer box).
It is possible that both have failed because one drives the other. Symptoms are usually a clunk when taking up drive for ages before it fails.
You can inspect for spline wear or failure by removing the circular plate on the rear held on by 6 bolts.
You may have the transfer box which enables replacement of the splined gear without stripping the box down, the gearbox splined shaft needs a total strip down to replace.
That's as far as my knowledge takes me I'm afraid and could well be incorrect because I'm not familiar with the later boxes.
Plenty are on here though so you've had a thread bump at least.

in what way are they gone ,it would seem likely its to do with fitting a new clutch

It first came about when he was off to his vcaravan for the weekend and when in 5th gear it started to clunk (described as if something had come lose in the box)
Dropping into 4th appeared to alleviate the problem.
Garage told him it was the flywheel and set about doing that as well as the clutch at the same time.
When they had finished they got back to him saying it hadn't cured it and it must be the box. However the flywheel was dead and this was probably the cause of it. They went on to say the transfer box was also dead quoting it had hardly any oil in and what was in was black as night.
He's a little naive when it comes to cars and just said yes ok sort it.
I'm a little less trusting and feel they aren't really sure so are simply covering all bases. Especially after the flywheel didn't cure it.
He's opted to have both gear and transfer box done on their advice but I haven't seen either once removed to see if they were both really bushed.
