Can anyone help on this please? I want to know if the transfer box from a Discovery 1 is the same as a Discovery 2. I need the one with the 1.2:1 ratio . I have found one local to me but it is on a Discovery 1 and I just wondered if the ratio is the same as the 2.

most d1s are 1.22 ,so youd know no difference, you need to change front output flange ,and you wouldnt have the high/low switch which is used for hill descent and throttle response

Thanks for that James. At present the vehicle has transfer box from a 2.5 N/A 110. A 12D I believe. Would the front output flange from that swap onto the D1 transfer box? The engine by the way is a 2.8 Isuzu diesel.
Another alternative is to get a 26D from a Range Rover Classic 3 speed auto, but have a feeling that might be a bit difficult to get hold of.

flange would swap over , i swap front housing too but it means you need to reset preload on center diff bearings ,i wouldnt bother with early rr box ,the 3 speed auto is 1.003 and gears are thinner td5 really need the 300 tdi on gear size

Do you mean I could just get away with swapping the flange or is it imperative to swap the bellhousing too? I would have no idea about setting preloads etc..
I will forget about the RR box.
Thankyou

its vital to change front output housing if you want hi/lo switch to work or you could move the wires and fit a switch in the cab

The one that's fitted at the moment doesn't have a hi/lo switch as such. It just has the lever for the diff lock and that does the high and low box. Is that the one you are calling a switch?
Sorry for being a bit thick - I know about London cabs but not a lot about Land Rovers.

So for a straight forward job with no messing about then I would be best off fitting the D2 box and forget about the D1?

it would be better as you have both switches working as should ,but ive fitted d1s and modified them to give diff lock on d2s were it wasnt fitted

I know someone who has a d2 box with difflock coming out of a car tomorrow - suspect it might need bearings doing though...

Ben I wrote the above before reading yours. I would really like one that doesn't need anything doing but thanks for your input.

The transfer box I am considering buying is still fitted to a Disco 1 so is still mated up to gearbox. Will this gearbox be an LT77?
