hi,
On autotrader i have come across an interesting hybrid; series 111 body on a range rover chassis with a 200tdi !
Do u guys think that too much tinkering has taken place or that it is worth viewing as i like price,condition etc

It may be worth a look solong as its done well and remember "there is no such thing as a standard Landy"

if you do want to buy it, just remember that it may be difficult to sell it on again. peeps dont like hybrids generally. so finding a buyer may be a problem.
 
mmmm,phoned trader today,no service history at all,not even sure when it was hybridised,reckons 6 yrs ago but cant be sure.......an old saying that mentions a barge pole is springing to mind,u agree ?
 
I wouldn't necessarily expect someone who hybridises a Landy to have a service history for the vehicle ... but I would require reciepts, photos, logs of work, and a consistant, detailed story.

If it sounds like fun, why not go and have a look ... could be full of character!

I know a couple of people who've made their own hybrids. Jim's is the best, 88" series 2 onto a custom hybrid 86" chassis, Range Rover engine and mechanicals, custom made rear tub with series I wings and bonnet. Alright, he's a brilliant engineer and mechanic ;)

He wins every time he competes in it :(
 
thanks 4 the comments all,Blippie ur right, it is full of character,can tell that just by the photos,but this is all my savings and like i said i am a complete beginner and the trader says he has NO paper work,i might be missing out on a real gem ( i love the series body and want a 200tdi ),but i just dont feel confident enough
 
hi tookey, Be patient wait 3/4weeks then give them a ring and if it is still for sale go and see it. In the mean time try and get someone who knows Land Rovers to go with you and give it the" once over". As a hybred it will be hard to sell. and if its still available bring cash and offer them about half the original price and haggle for all your worth. Any trader knows " New money-- buys new goods" and a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Hasten slowly and go for it, if it is what you really want. Sounds like you are going to make one anyway. This would save you a lot of work. BB
 
I've had a dig around in some magazines I've had lying around. There was an article in LRO about a chap who had built a "Defender 90 on a Range Rover chassis using Series panels" ... pretty much the same concept as you have described.

I can't find the article, but it might nudge someone's memory.

OK, so definately not the one featured in the article I saw.

The thing that would worry me here is the registration. Is the W-reg the Series III or the Range Rover? If it's not the Range Rover, you could well have trouble with the vehicles identity and registrartion.

I know the chap is a bit low on paperwork, but you will definately need the registration histories of the donor vehicles. I've seen a number of restored or hybrid vehicles that claim to have an old registration but turn out to be new vehicles without claim to that identity.

Personally, I think for that money you could get a tidy 90/110 or Defender which might be a more sensible buy. If you are dead set on a Tdi, then consider a Discovery. You could easily get a L-reg or newer Disco for that money - giving you the engine and wheelbase you desire.

I'm with the advice you got above. If you have your heart set on this one, give it a month, then go round with a couple of grand cash and see.

Otherwise, keep your eyes open for a vehicle that is less likely to bite you in the rear. They are out there - you need a bit of patience and a touch of luck ...

... and consider a Disco!

thanks alot blippie,sound advice.I havent owned a car 4 10yrs so i am not competant on what i am looking at with paperwork either, so could easily be 'done' by a trader so i am gonna steer clear. My last car i sold for a cup of tea,it was that crap !!
My education does continue though,today i went and had a look at a 110 td,the battery was dead,great,but its all experience !! :)

i cant believe the price hes asking!
keep well away from it, is my advice.

as been said, you can get a proper untouched/standard defender, or a nice disco for that price.

thank u very much 4 the offer blippie,but save urself the stamp,i only learnt about 'suck,push,bang,blow' a month ago so rebuilds might not b for a while !!! :)
 
now now then, whats all tthis fuss about, lets face it whatever you do to your landy makes it into a hybrid, looking at this one, even on the dealers website it doesnt look that bad, and lets face it, its different. yes i agree its a bit expensive but at least its got a tdi engine and a defender body. spares for this are not a problem, the only thing to really query is the log book, and your insurance will be a mine field unless you go to a specialist. personally if it were near to me i would be very tempted. it all boils down to your own confidence in mechanics . i personally like hybrids as they are different to the norm and they stand out from the crowd. ;)
