got my s3 fitted with a 200tdi yesterday and i have a 90 radiator with the in built oil cooler but it seems to big and i would preffer to use the original series radiator is an oil cooler absolutely needed or can i plumb it out, i did see a thread on here where it showed some pics of finished tdi conversions but cant find it if anyone can link them to me that would be great
 
You can just loop the pipe back on its self.

I would buy aftermarket oil cooler and put it in the wing ;-)
 
is it safe to run without one though james is more what im concerned about?, i found the photo of fitting the disco radiator so it may go that way
 
yes safe to do, ive done numerous for people ,havent had any concerns yet,my own light weight is running about like that
 
easily :)its only a select number ive retained ,ive fitted 200s in most ways but some people have not wanted to have any modification to bodywork /chassis etc,which is why ive fitted them without intercooler and oil cooler etc,seem to go well enough .but hardly stressed when in a series
 
yeah its true that it will hardly be worked hence why i was keen to fit the series radiator
1400kg compared to 2200kg in a disco should provide me with some good mpgs and interesting wet roundabouts :-D as for body mods i had to trim the inner wing a bit to allow for the turbo didnt fancy clocking the turbo looked more hassle that it was worth for the amount that the wing needed off
 
with earlier engines ,they could be either or ,military were cooled as vehicle may be stood idling for long periods (no air flow over sump) for later more powerful engines (more power more heat produced )oil cooler maybe be more necessary but general running about in series with tdi ,its not essential
 
hi james mine is a 3.5 v8 with no oil cooler fitted although it did have a mocal sandwich plate fitted which just looped back on itself,its got a v8 rad fitted so is it worth connecting up or not
 
i was under the impression that the cooler was there cos of the turbo, increasing the oil temperature being so close to the exhaust temperature.

If you can with no modification then why haven't you??
 
oil is used to cool pistons as well as to lubricate ,most get enough cooling through sump ,same with intercoolers depends on use most tdis never get anywhere near the limit , spending all day flat out on the motorway etc is different than most do with a series motor ,lack of servicing ,poor injector ,poor rad etc is more likely to kill your engine ,you can easily ,smell /tell if oil is getting too hot ,as said oil is cooled through sump too

I wouldnt be bothered running without one, they were probably fitted as standard due to the possibility of the motors being used in deserts etc. We all know how cool these engines run anyway so I doubt they get anywhere near the top end of the scale for the oil under normal conditions. If you have any concerns just fit an oil temp guage :)
 
Landrover when spec-ing and building the original car would have tried to cater for all options, they did not know if you was going to tow 3.5t down to Southern Spain at 80mph all the way or just pop round the shops to buy a pint of milk.
