I'm looking to get new tires for my '96 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. I have BF
Goodrich's on it now. I want something with an aggressive tread but good
ride on hwy. Any suggestions? I've been thinking of either Mich.LTX A/T or
Kelly Safari AWR. What do you think?

What's wrong with the BFGs? I've used BFGs (first the A/Ts, then the M/Ts)
for 15 years now with excellent results, and have numerous friends use BFG
tires with the same, high mileage results. And as soon as the Michelins that
came on my '98 Dodge Ram 4x4 (bought it used) wear out (and I bet I've got a
long way to go...) I'm going to put on BFG A/Ts. One of my friends got 80K
miles from his set of All-Terrains on his Toyota 4x4.

So...I guess I sorta answered your question about the Michelins.

In addition to the Michelin AT, check out the Pirelli Scorpion AT,
similar design, wrapped steel belts like the Michelin.

The only complaint I have with the BFG's is that they ride like crap on the
hwy. I've balanced them several times and still get a 60mph shimmy. A friend
of mine is trying to talk me into the Kelly's, but I'm not sure of them.

Dumb question I know, but are you sure the tires are causing the shimmy?
And if they are have you inspected them to see if you can determine why? It
may just be one bad tire, which can happen with any brand.
Anyway, I've been considering Michelins myself, saw some at the tire dealers
and they looked pretty nice, and Kelly used to make good tires, not sure how
they are now, haven't used any since the mid 80's

I like both the tires you have selected but have you considered
Remingtons Sport king I put them on my 2wd ford and found it to
preform like a four-by. I live in northern canada and our winters can
be wicked so tires are important. I have had the remingtons for 3
years and no trouble in the mud snow or ice. The only thing left to
try with them is a 4x4.

The sidewalls. Too weak, as there are too few plys, and
sticks and whatever puncture them with relative ease. Not
so with Super Swampers and the like.

BFG's are cheap though, so, if you're not taking them into
places where sidewall strenght really matters - or can live
with the bigger risk of shredding your tyres - then I guess
the're ok.

Of course they ride like crap on the highway <g>. Any M/T
type tyre does so. Or, to a lesser extent, any A/T. As
compared to street tyres, that is. Much like any off-road
vehicle rides like crap on-road as compared to a decent
sedan. If you ask me, the "SUV fashion", which makes people
get offroadish vehicles for mere on-road usage, really sucks.
Fuel consumption, safety and so forth are compromized for
no good.

Otoh, if the complaint was that the BFG's ride's worse than
the competition of their kin, I guess there could indeed be a
problem with the particular specimen(s), or something else in
your car's undercarriage.

Michelin LTX tires are very good, and a place to buy them is Sam's club. At
least that's where I found them the cheapest.

I have All Terrains on my Tacoma. 31 inchers. I get a slight, very slight
vibe at 110kph or so, but not always. Feel and sound good on highway, looks
great and aggressive. Someone said they're cheap, granted I didn't price
other brands, but I paid top dollar for a set of those.

Nothing's wrong with them. BFG A/T KO's are very highly rated, and are
popular for good reason.

However in certain sizes, Michelin ATX A/T's have a higher load rating,
and most have a higher speed rating (S versus Q). If your OEM tires
don't have these specs, then go for whichever is cheaper, as they are
both very good All Terrain tires.

Since he has a full size truck, the load rating might be an issue.

You should look into the new wrangler MT/R. they sare the best off
road tire on the market. they wear 78% longer on the road and 25%
longer off road, as well as have the dura-wall construction for side
wall protectiom.

Wear 78% longer than what? Goodyear's last Mud Traction tire?

"Dura-wall" sounds great but is meaningless unless it defines something.
Otherwise it is just marketing speak. Are there belts in the sidewall?
How many? Folded? Made of what? Dura-foo?

They may be great tires, but your post is just sales mumbo-jumbo.

Before that, ask someone who owns them...

I know a couple folks running the new MTR and they tell me the on road
wear is very disappointing. It is a high traction tire that is softer
than say the BFG MT so wears faster.

I have a set on my work vehicle. I live on the island of Lanai in
Hawaii, alot of volcanic rock and construction sites. never had a
flat or sidewall blowout. We have tried multiple brands and this is
the best we have ever had. the last three sets of tires i had on my
vehicle ended up with 9 blowouts over the course of a year. Have not
had one flat with the mt/r. I like them so much that I am going to
get a set for my jeep wrangler. But i agree that if your going to do
mostly highway driving then get a set that performs better on-road
than off.
