Hi!

I'm starting to get into this "fix it myself and avoid having my wallet assaulted by mechanics" malarkey..atleast, for easy jobs that don't require any actual knowledge! I've had a quick search of the previous threads and couldn't really find anything that was of help.

I've got a bit of a squeak whilst driving when my handbrake is off. If I apply it a little, the squeak disappears.
Guessing this means that the cable needs tightening.

How do I go about doing this?

Tightening the cable wont help - that is bodging the symptoms rather than curing the fault. Its more likely a problem with return springs on the brake shoes.

Gotcha. So it's a case of identifying the brake with the dodgy return spring and replacing?

Slacken cable back and depress foot brake several times to allow auto adjusters to take up any slack in handbrake wheel mechanism. Then adjust cable until hand brake is on in three clicks.

If you don't know how to check/test/set the hand brake then you should get someone who does to help. The Freelander 1 has drum brakes at the rear which provide hand brake and foot brake. Disk brakes on the front for foot brake.
