Hi everyone

For some reason now I am only getting cold air from the vents until I start driving the car. I recently replaced the crank seal (see thread) I thought I may of had an air lock or faulty water pump which was replaced and have bled the system but before I took it out on a long run too see how she goes and check if everything is ok I just ran the engine until upto temp but only getting cold air, took it out for a short spin and eventually the hot air comes through.

I had recently bought a new thermostat but must admit did not check it before fitting as I see has been advised on threads but after fitting the thermostat the temp in the cabin did regulate better and seemed to be fine but now it seems to be playing up. Prior to the overheat it seemed fine but thinking back it did still give quite a bit of heat even when the control panel was down to 17 18 etc went alot cold as supposed to when Lo was selected.

Do you think its the thermostat again or something else? If it is the thermostat can you advise of a good supplier for a decent thermostat. Got the new one off Ebay last time.

it could be blocked/air locked in the heater matrix, take the pipes off in the engine bay that go through the bulk head and give em a blast with hose pipe.

also could be the blend motors that control the heater flaps, check these by moving them through the full operation to see if there is any change!

one thing to remember tho is to make sure you get all the air out the coolant system, you don't want to end up in the same situation as me in a couple of months time!

I was impressed on following your thread how well and how quickly you stripped the engine down to the heads though

I am reading just where the pipes are at the bulk head and will give it a go tomorrow, apart from that its bloomin freezing at the moment.:Cry:

i have a very methodical way of working, and the theory that it's ferked as it stands so surely things can only get better!!

actually me and another fella had a race today, he stripped a astra petrol head off and i did mine! i had finnished about 10 mins before him and he had help from my wifes uncle!!! he had all the tools away before me tho!! mind you he hogged the air supply and air ratchet and i had a few fags and was re-installing windows on unc's pc whilst doing car!! 3hours ish to get em off!! bet the astra does more miles in the coming weeks than mine tho!! lol!!!

i actually enjoy messing around with things and enjoy stripping things down and rebuilding! that said, as it is or was my daily ride there is an urgency to get it going again!!

be careful withh them pipes they are aluminium and could distort easily, remove the clips and try to free them off a bit with a small screwdriver. also if they are hot then they will come off a bit easier but the water inside will be hot so be careful.

the pipes are on the left as you look at the engine, drivers side, between brake servo and engine, two pipes side by side.

you cant miss em!!

I think that is the best way I learnt that from experience the more methodical the better life it is for you.

I have only ever done one head gasket on an old rover so I admire what you do and looking at the Range V8 it looks a right nightmare

I hope you let the mrs know that while you was doing the headgasket you also was installing windows on the pc so you can also multi-task. lol

Thanks for the info I will be delicate with the pipes and give them a flush through and hopefully it will solve the problem.

i'm telling the wife nothing, she will want me to dress myself AND iron my own clothes if i tell her i can do two things at once!

good luck with the heater pipes, mine were a bit of a **** to get off so i got some more pipe and slit the originals with a stanly. works out easier and cheaper if you think there is a chance of knackering the metal pipes!
