Thanks. I only have a screwdriver 1/4" drive flexi extension in my kit which is really short but I have some wobble extensions in 3/8" which I wondered would get down there with an allen bit on the end. What length flexi is yours cos I'll look on eBay for a cheapie?I use one of those multifit drivers with a flexi extension then the Allen Key. Works quite well.
It is a bit of a faff though.

It's not too badder job. You just have to feel around back to find that one tricky bolt that is tucked away.
When you put the cover back on, just make sure the lip that is on the bottom, slides into the base that is already attached to the engine. A gentle bit of wiggling and pushing downwards, and it should line up with all the bolt holes nicely. If they don't, then the lip has probably slipped onto the outside of the case, and won't make the seal.

At the back of the air filter cover you will see and feel a recess, a 1/4" drive with it's extension will do the job easy and is best tool for the job, the extensions listed above can and do twist if the bolt as been over tightened by a muscle man mechanic, link to how to I did a while back on the R40 but sane process.

Yup, TD4 FL1. Not done it before (done loads of others though) so watched a few vids to see what's what and seemed to get the idea that it is a problem undoing the two allen bolts at the back.We ARE talking TD4 here aren't we, over 6-years servicing one and I never thought it was a difficult job?
Replacing the air filter is not very difficult and no special tools are required, I just use a long hex-head key.

So which is it? Sounds a right carry-on from your description! If you lean over the top of the engine you can see them or if you struggle with that, use a mirror (never had to resort to that though).
When you know where they are, use touch to get the hex-head key into the correct position.
