This morning at the mot station the chap was doing the front wheels lifted on a jacks . He was spinning the offside front wheel but the nearside wasnt even moving or vice versa . the props are all there.then he checked the back wheels they span in opposite directions when turning the offside wheel ..So does this mean my 4x4 is 2x2 ?

That is strange...

I was going to say that if the front brakes are binding a tad, then one would be stationary...but that would just cause the front prop to turn and then the VCU....which would try to turn the rear wheels, but as they are on the deck won't turn and as such the wheel should be quite stiff to turn.....

Unless the VCU is quite free and then it would turn easily until the fluid warms up in order to lock up the VCU....

Might just be the brakes gripping slightly preventing it from turning during the wheel bearing check...

When you jack the front end and turn one wheel the other must spin in the opposite direction. Unless you have no front prop fitted or the VC has lost all it's fluid and is not connecting.

When I put it into drive, on four axle stands, the rear wheels turned but only the front nearside wheel turned and it was very slow. I could stop the front wheel turning with my hand.
Any suggestions on what it could it be e.g. VC or front diff, the front prop was still turning?
Thanks

If the front prop was turning at the same speed as the rear, and you were able to stop it with your hand (Don't suggest you try this chaps.....) and you still have all your fingers, I would suggest the Diff has gone....

Think you had better get someone who knows what they are about to look at it for you. Are you saying the front prop was turning but you could stop the N/S front wheel and the other one did not turn. Did the car pass the MOT, both front wheels free from binds Etc? Something very strange here. Jack one front wheel up and try to turn it, if it spins freely VC is knackered. Cannot see it being diff or you would have some very strange noises indeed coming from it. Jack both front wheels up and get someone to hold one wheel whilst you try to turn the other if VC is gone that should turn the prop. If you can turn a wheel without turning other wheel and prop does not turn someone has stolen your diff. :D:D

just been in the garage the range still in the air the front wheels off the ground .the wife holding one wheel me free spining the other side and vice versa nothing the front prop wasnt moving they is no noise from the front diff either ....and good news it did pass its mot:confused:

free spinning one jacked up wheel doesnt necessarily mean vc ,could be diff

Of course it could James, but you would expect to hear something whilst driving if a half shaft was flailing about like a whippets dick. What is there that could break in diff that would cause just one wheel to turn and not the other?

and probably most times you can tell ,but i have found a good few people who have been driving in 2wd for a while

You have a problem here. If you can do that, both planet wheels must be missing or there are no teeth on them. Don't think there is room in the casing for them to have broken up and not be jamming crown wheel. You need diff out to see what's going on.

And I wouldn't be driving it until it's checked, if there's a whole bunch of busted off gearteeth in the bottom of the diff casing, one or more could suddenly get caught in whats left of the workings and jam it up - that wouldn't be nice nor fun while at cruising speeds.........

It is the well known fuel economy two wheel drive /seized VC mod.All the gears have been removed from the diff.casing.:D:D:D
