The Freelander TD4 has developed a very strange fault. If I start the engine and then turn the blower on a notch I get a rumbling grating noise coming from the engine water pump side. If I then rev the engine the noise gets louder and the frequency picks up. It is really loud and so bad you would not want to drive the vehicle with the blower turned on.

If I turn the blower off inside the car the noise stops. Now I did replace the fuel filter last week and I was wondering whether it could possibly be the fuel burning heater?

Since replacing the filter and diesel pressure sensor last week, the wife has also told me that the low fuel indicator light, headlight on dash light and imobiliser audible warning when you get in the car are also not working.

It is not the blower fan itself, because there is no noise with the engine not running and the blower on inside the vehicle.

Anyone have an idea what this could be?

Does the air con pump run when the air con is off, but blower is on? If not, it is not that as this happens when air con is off.

it could be you are asking for more power and the belts are slack or the alternator has a problem

will do if "screen" or "footwell+screen" air flow routing is selected

Are you ready for this. I like a nice simple fix.

"Turned out to be the splash guard rubbing on the compressor. Popped it out - noise has gone now."

People forget that if air is heading towards the windscreen... a freelander automatically switches the air conditioning on.

I really wish it wouldn't...

well done that was not expensive to fix and Lord hippo if it is a red squirrel well they look rusty LOL
