Hiya all,

Had a few problems with my engine temperatures and temperature gauge. A few months ago the gauge hardly went up, staying well under halfway, then suddenly it started to show high, approaching red and when stopped the engine bay was indeed really hot, way hotter than I'd expect.

Anyway, it now doesn't read at all .. so looking round we (topcat and I) can't actually find a temperature sender .. but we have found a blue wire with a female spade connector on that doesn't go anywhere, with no spade connection close or in reach of the wire! So, with ignition on tc touched the connector to the engine and lo, the gauge went up! removed the connection and it went down, so it seems the gauge works when grounded ... but isn't actually telling a temperature.

I've ordered, 'cos it's leaking badly, a new waterpump and gasket anyway (Britpart suffix g) and thought whilst I was doing that I'll do the gauge, so has anyone any ideas about where to put the blue wire and where the temperature sender actually is?

I'm new to the 19j, still finding my way with it so please be gentle ..

Anyone any idea where the standard temp sender on a 19J usually is then?

I can't find it in the books and parts lists I have!!

top of head,lhs at rear, prc2505 for pre 89 or prc6663 for later,same as 2.5 na and petrol

On mine the actual sender is towards the back of the cylinder head, but the original loom had two spade connectors on the same wire. I guess on one of the other engines the sender is in a different place, and this way the same loom works for both.

Cheers. Found it now, pretty obvious really, but the blue wire that isn't connected to anything is the opposite side entirely, near the front, throttle linkage side .. with nothing to connect to and wouldn't reach the sender!

There is a wire (green I think) on the actual sender which I re-crimped 'cos it was very loose but still nothing on the gauge, so I'm picking a new sender up today.

In the original post you said the blue wire made the temp guage go up and down when earthed?! Can only be temp sender connection? had PO routed it round for some reason and connected to said green wire?

Sorry I didn't follow this up, but it's an odd one this. The blue wire isn't connected to anything, the temp gauge (once I knew where it was) had it's own wire already connected, so the new sender was obviously connected to this and works well. The blue wire near the throttle mechanism area is still not connected to anything .. and I haven't grounded it to anything since the gauge worked, didn't want to jinx it, so I just wrapped a bit of tape around it to stop it grounding accidentally and possibly doing something bad elsewhere!

As it's working it's been pushed aside for other jobs as time's scarce .. but I will return to it at some time in the future ..

Haha - if it aint got some tape stopping something it aint a landy!! Only thing I can think of which doesnt effect owt else in that area is the oil pressure. Connector is pretty much above prop shaft - see pic.
