My 2000 TD5 turbo is whistling a lot. Is this normal? As far as I know it’s the original. It has a standard exhaust and on tick over you can hear a whistle out the back. When driving it really hisses and drowns out most of the other noises. The turbo seems to be working ok and is very noticeable from about 1500 rpm onwards.

Is this a sign it’s on its way out?

Does it have a standard full exhaust, or a straight through because after taking out my middle box and taking the cat off it, mine whistles away quite happily

Mine is stock, except centre delete pipe and it doesn't whistle at all.
Think you will find your exhaust probably isn't stock

I had straight through one and changed it to a full standard one because it was too loud. Now all I can hear is the whistle and hiss of the turbo. Sounds cool actually but it is also a little down on power and I’m conscious that it might not be working correctly.

You can actually buy aftermarket impellers specifically to get a whistle. Quite the thing in the US pickup community
Check your impeller isn't chipped or bent, maybe? That seems to be where it originates from.
