Hi guys just quick one, does anyone else’s temp guage sit just above half way? Mine seems to go to around the middle/ top line of the temp symbol (not the top as normal into red) on the guage, just wondering if it’s normal. Cheers rich.

Hi. if it stays at 3 o'clock it's normal just be aware that it goes there from 70*C and stays there up to 120*C... bad engineering, if you tow or you have bigger than standard tyres i strongly recommend to fit an additional gauge to see the real engine temp to stay on the safe side, here's a simple and efficient solution https://www.ebay.com/itm/CYLINDER-H...mm-Blue-LED-/162128254530?hash=item25bf98d642

LR made a digital gauge that looks like it should be analogue. This was to allow the driver to relax and not worry until they cylinder head had actually melted. But it seems most cars are the same so to be fair, it probably is more of a worry if you have modified your Disco as SF suggests above.
My Td5 runs at about 90 to 95 degrees when on a normal run.

Sounds like it’s like most modern cars then, a Vauxhall I had once used to sit just past half, used to send me under as I always liked them at bang on half way.

If you are worried... buy a nanocom, and look at the live data... oh, and dont forget to change the "High Temperature" warning levels.. That mistake made me replace a perfectly good rad, fan and thermostat... Oh well, at least I know they are good.

CHT rather than ECT? I like not having to cut a hose in two in order to fit a probe into the coolant, but given the lack of spark plugs where do you attach the 14mm terminal?

CHT or ECT no matter which is about a rough engine temperature so if one of these readings is rising above 110 it's a sign of a problem, i linked that 14mm sensor for example as it was the first hit but there are versions with smaller rings too as they say here https://www.mainline-sensors.co.uk/...e-gauge-vw-pyrometer-cht-5-meter-sensor-cable you can fit it under any bolt on the head with a washer a good place would the coolant elbow

Thanks SF. On a related issue, what temps would you consider normal and of concern for EGT?

IMO on a well tuned one the EGT should not exceed 650 under heavy load then it should drop and stay around 300 max 350 while cruising according to the weight. If it goes above 700 let's say max 750 then something is wrong

Thanks. I fitted my pyrometer into the blanking plate at the end of the manifold, so I will work on those figures -20 deg.

Yes my EGT only creeps over 400 degrees C on the motorway up a steepish incline, otherwise 350 degrees cruising at 65mph on the flat. As above, coolant is about 93 ish steady. The engine cover added a degree or so i found when fitted. On my runs i found the viscous fan just delayed warm up slightly compared to being removed. It sits at the same temp when fully warmed up. But this was traffic free, b road cruising not stuck in city traffic with AC on, on a hot day. Good job the AC is busted eh
