Well hello to the oracles of Landrovers :)

I am new to this forum so please bear with me.

I have a 51 plate TD5 and as stated above I am in the rolling hills of West Sussex. This is my 3rd disco. Started with the 200, then 300, now the good old TD5.

I am a bit of a thicky when it comes to diagnosing problems on this one as I cant see the main components as they are hiding under plastic.

Current issues:

When changing gear there appears to be a massive delay for when the engine pick up revs again. Any ideas?

Why does the whole car shake / growl over 3k revs?

Power steering seems a bit stiff.

The clutch is concrete

To chip or not to chip, this is another question.

It does need a service in a month so a couple of these issues may be picked up but any help or advise from the Landyzone collective who be great

I wouldn't bother getting it chipped (you mean get an engine re-map?) until you've solved the troubles it has.

The clutch is hydraulic. It might seem a little heavy to some, but you're used to Discos, so there's something wrong  maybe the release mechanism? No real knowledge myself sorry.

Shaking/growling - Check the propshafts, the universal joints and the sliding joints might be dry and/or worn out. The rotorflex coupling (rubber donut) on the rear prop may be cracked and worn.

Any power steering fluid in it? Any leaks on the floor?

Just chucking ideas out there.

The plastic engine cover is only held on by three bolts ;) ;)

Not sure about the sluggish engine - is the turbo OK?

WELCOME!

Hi Difflock

Great call on the UJ's etc. Ill check this.

Yes I do have steering fluid. Thick but not totally:) It is a tad "milky" though so could possibly do with changing as a guess?

Heard a rumor that some TD5 were fitted with upgraded clutch springs which needed a survo /master cylinder upgrade. Any thoughts?

If I keep the revs up around 2700 - 3000 there is no lag. you can probably tell im no mechanic but are there vacuum pipes? My though is on high revs a possible leak would not matter too much but on lower revs it would be more obvious.

A whole three nuts for the cover. This should be in my ability:D

Thanks for the support and welcome

Don't know about the clutch spring upgrades sorry. Milky power steering fluid does not sound good. It should be quite a clear cherry red colour. If it's anything like the reason for engine oil turning white, it's "emulsified" from water ingress into the system.. Change the fluid is the first, cheapest option. After that it's looking into the steering box, power steering pump and maybe associated suspension components; any of them tighter than they should be causing the drag on the power steering system etc.
