Hi guys.

I'm in the process of improving the departure angle on the discovery. I've removed the rear step and tow bar, the latter will be replaced with a reciever type.

The other thing that always catches is the exhaust. Ive looked at cutting it back and spotted that the rearmost hanger is before the silencer. I'm tempted to cut just after the hanger and before the box which would mean its tucked right up out of the way.

Has anyone removed just the small rear box on a TD5? How does it sound? I assume being such a small box it wont make much difference.

A search shows up plenty about removing the center box but not the rear.

I think it would sound good for a 5 cylinder diesel. If you're keeping the centre box then I would say no issues at all! Have you been on you tube and had a listen? I just dumped the suitcase sized centre box & left the little back box in place

I've had a few people come and ask me how I got it to sound that good

Or.. you could try this:- Bonnet exit exhaust!

I've got none on mine but it's loud! If you cut the exhaust back, you will end up with soot on the rear door as the gases get drawn up the back of the car.

I've seen the many videos of TD5s with the center box removed and quite like the 5pot sound you get.

I've just had a look up the tail pipe and the rear box is a "straight through" box as standard meaning it just has a perforated pipe with no baffles etc. I doubt removing it would make much noticeable difference to the sound TBH. A shame as I was hoping removing it would kill two birds with one stone, increased clearance and more sound at the same time.

I think I'll go the proven route and remove the center box. Then only cut the pipe back to just after the rear box.

As Phil said though, the back door will get covered in soot even more than it does as standard thanks to the brick like aerodynamics. Hey, everybody to their own ideas

I'll still weld a down turn back on to aim the soot down, should keep it to a minimum.

A bit more soot on the back end is a small price to pay if it means the exhaust stops being clouted when off road

Will it not be a MOT failure?? why don't you side exit it! if your that bothered!```````` are you trying to go vertical? what next rear bumper, i think you will find in most case or unless you are going real extremes the standard front bumper and rear will come adrift pretty quick,

I had thought about a side exit but not keen TBH, it's a lot more work for little gain.

Of course I'm not trying to go vertical

. We all know the D2 has a long rear overhang, doesn't take much to catch it when off road even when your not doing extreme stuff. I'm just moving the lowest items out of the way.

The front standard bumper has already been cut and will be going in favor of a steel item as i want a 2" receiver at the front. Undecided on the rear at the moment, I'll see how it goes.

you shouldn't of cut it!! making a good premuim on ebay now,

It had already been damaged at a pay & play. When I saw the price of a replacement I decided to cut it while I wait for a steel one.
