Hi All

Help.....
I own a defender 90 300tdi. I didnt no much about the history so I replaced the bits that needed replacing(water pump, viscous, tensioner) and also had the timing belt change. When driving the car you can hear a whizzy noise when on and off the gas. You cant hear it when you stick your head under the bonnet but when driving its that noise that gets stuck in you head!!! Help.....
Can a vacum pump make such noise? Oil pump? Turbo? forgot to say that it had the noise when I bought it......
thanks

Most likely the turbo - my 200 does it, from about 1500 revs onwards particularly when accelerating or putting engine under some strain - and that's the turbo (aka Turdo)

thanks for your comments.....
if it is the turbo how come I am getting good boost? It doesnt burn any oil? The turbo hose when sqeezed has good pressure? The only thing I have notice is when start the black puff of diesel is a little thicker(normal for a 300tdi)?

can anyone recommend a turbo supplier?

Sorry mate, shoulda said, that is a NORMAL turbo noise - it means it's working! Sounds a bit like a flock of starlings taking off!

I know how a turbo should sound but the noise I hear sound more like a lolly stick in a fan blade (but quite). I checked the viscous and the bearings had play so I replaced it......anyone know of a good mechanic in the south london / surrey area?
I didnt have that noise on my old 300tdi?

cheers again

I have check them....are seem ok.
I will have to turn the radio up louder!
Is there any manual way of checking the turbo for play?

Take the air intake hose off, and see how much the vanes move up and down. They should move a bit, but not enough to contact the housing.
