Anyone have a clue what this noise can be?

No puff of smoke from the exhaust during start up or on acceleration, all plugs are dry, truck has 175,000km, oil level isn't rising from fuel, coolant reservoir has no oil or vice versa, normal blow-by, fuel filter was changed 2 weeks ago no difference. Air Filter changed last week. No diesel leaks, fuel pump is quiet. Cleaned MAF and MAP Sensor with MAF cleaner no difference.

I would say this isn't an issue but clearly doesn't sound normal.
I pushed 100km/hr x 2 hours last week on the highway, truck ran like a dream, and I was getting winks from the misses passing me

Truck runs nice, never goes above 1500 rpm in the city. the sound will not occur throughout the drive, only when I start her up, sometimes it won't make this noise, but it sorts itself instantly. It is a hit or miss when the noise occurs and the sound will either be loud or not. This video I would say it was louder than usual. It only lasts for under 10 secs.

When I start her up after a short pit stop (Let say the grocery store), it will not sound, but sometimes it may. Very strange.

EGR Delete + Straight piped

I am thinking an injector, injector harness or fuel pump.

Any tips are helpful

Admittedly I'm listening on ****ty laptop speakers, but I don't hear anything in that video that I don't hear on my own Td5. Will listen again a bit louder when my boss has gone for lunch!

Yes, I too played it on my phone speaker sounds normal because how loud the engine is in general

With headphones or earbuds you will definitely hear it.

At the 12 second the noise will stop

I read on here many years go that TD5s start on 4 cylinders rather than 5, and then the ECU lets no. 5 injector start releasing fuel. Also, no. 5 cylinder doesn't have a glowplug, which might have something to do with this design feature. So I think what you've got is the first few seconds of rough running, and then it evens out as no. 5 comes in. If the engine's smooth and reliable otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it.

I know there is only 4 glow plugs, but starting on 4!

To the op, remove the air filter trunking and have a listen when you start it.

Thank you Brown, I appreciate the response. I started her up twice this morning, no noise, as if it was idling at operating temp.

Glow plugs, I did do the plugs two months ago, beru. The connecters snapped so I put the pieces together and heat shrink them. I don't think a bad connection would matter though at 20+ Celsius.

I'll take your word and let it be.....

My fuel pump will overflow even when not fully filled when I fill the truck up, I did the breather hose 3 months ago. I heard of a one way pressure relief valve being in the fuel tank to let the tank breathe.

I started it up a third time today no noise but now I have half a tank.

Could it be my fuel tank breather?

Just throwing things that stand out from what I see

Yes, the Defender TD5 fuel pump is below the fuel level whe the tank is full. The Discovery version has a flatter top on the tank and doesn't have ths problem. When I got my Defender, fuel would drip out if I filled the tank completely. On addressing the problem, I discovered that the previous person had not reinstalled the pump correctly. There's a threaded ring which holds it in, and this had been cross threaded so wasn;t pushing the pump down to compress the seal. I got a new seal and threaded ring (the thread on the tank was undamaged fortunately) and with a little sealant too, I was able to fill then tank without it leaking. I think something similar may be amiss with yours.

Very Interesting, I was going to drop it at 200,000km to give it a flush. I will note this and check when I do so.
It is a very aggressive overfill, as if the diesel is boiling in the tank.

I was thinking maybe a piece of the snapped old breather hose may be blocking the valve.
Not sure how that would affect my injectors or pump but thought why is it running better on half a tank oppose to over half a tank hence why I brought this relief valve point up.

I just found it strange, now the fourth start up today, no noise and half a tank.
I barely even primed the pump prior to starting (3 Sec) to intentionally have the noise occur but it did not.

I fill up usually every Friday so I will follow up if there is a difference with a full tank.

Again, thank you for your help. It is reassuring though for the whole day the noise didn't occur.

Would you conclude though that the injectors are, okay?

I can definitely hear a fast drum beat noise for a good few seconds then it stops. It does sound like a pump noise.
