My 1987 Range Rover, with 3.5 petrol engine, runs great most of the time, but has annoying new habit. When I am coming to stop it will stall out, but immediatly starts back and I go on my way. It doesnt do it all the time, but seems to happen more before the engine reaches it optimum operating temp. When it stalls the only warning light on the dash is the red battery light. Anybody have any ideas?

Hi and :welcome2:

Please post your location in your profile and you may be able to get local help.

It could be a faulty coolant temperature sensor which is sending the wrong temp info to the ECU.

Is yours an auto? Tickover may be just not high enough to overcome the drag from oil in a cold box.

My 1988 3.5Efi SE Vogue auto used to do the same but only when fully hot, but I think that was a combination of factors including ignition timing, faulty vacuum advance unit, and mixture being off. I never did find a single cure but just worked through everything ending with a tune up at the local garage to get it through the MOT emissions test.

Its an automatic and cranks right back up after it stops. Thank you for getting back with me on this. I will work your list and see what happens. William
