Strange....
I was expecting my Disco to fail today on exactly the same thing, but having spent 30 mins with some de-greaser and a scrubbing brush to remove all the old fluid it passed instead
I've heard of people changing this seal with the box still on, but if you're intending to keep your Disco for some time my personal choice would be to get a recon box from Adwest (or new if you're loaded). If mine had failed today, that's what I would be ordering about now....

if you can remove drop arm (usually pullers and a large drift with large lump hammer) you can remove dust seal then circlip ,put container underneath start engine and turn wheel seal and backing ring should blow out ,switch off as soon as,clean shaft ,stc2848 is seal kit ,seal needs to be worked in carefully then steel backing washer,top up reservoir

Failed on a leak from the box ? Damn ....I am NOT looking forward to next months test ! It will be maximum degreaser and pressure wash immediately before and then some judicious wiping round the corner from test station . Many of the MOT places in Cornwall were hit by undercover ministry inspectors back end of last year and so are now all right on their toes . Which is obviously a good thing in the bigger picture ......

seal then steel backing washer ,then circlip then dust seal,
All sorted guys many thanks new Mot today, just a quickie to get the seal in is a fiddly job as you have to get the apron of the seal tucked into the sleeve, but once in you have to push the seal inside to locate it in place, what I did was take the old steel washer grind it down a bit on the circumference so that it now fits lose in front of the seal, then I was able to tap the whole thing in using a screwdriver and small hammer until home, washer dropped out fitted the new one and circlip in job done.
